How Long Does Alcohol Stay in Urine? Understanding Alcohol and EtG Detection Times
If you are asking how long alcohol stays in urine, there is an important distinction to understand first: Alcohol itself and the evidence alcohol leaves behind do not disappear at the same time.
Ethanol, the alcohol in beer, wine, and liquor, usually has a relatively short detection window in urine. Specialized urine tests, however, can look for ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and ethyl sulfate (EtS), metabolites produced after the body processes alcohol. Those markers can remain detectable long after a person feels completely sober.
That is why one person may have no measurable alcohol on a breath test yet still have a positive urine test the next day, or potentially several days later. The most accurate answer is therefore not simply “24 hours” or “80 hours.”
Urine ethanol is generally detectable for hours rather than days, while EtG and EtS may be detectable for roughly 1 to several days depending on the amount consumed, the laboratory cutoff, the testing method, and individual variation. ARUP Laboratories lists approximately 1–12 hours for ethanol in blood or urine and 1–5 days for urinary EtG/EtS, while a major clinical laboratory review reports that EtG and EtS are commonly detectable for about 24–48 hours, with detection beyond 72 hours reported after heavier alcohol exposure.
Those ranges overlap because alcohol testing is not a countdown clock. It is a laboratory measurement affected by what was consumed, what the test is designed to detect, and where the laboratory draws the line between a positive and negative result.

Will Alcohol Show Up on My Urine Test?
Possibly, but the answer depends heavily on which test was ordered.
Imagine two people provide urine samples Monday morning after drinking Saturday night. One test measures ethanol. The other measures EtG. Those two laboratories may reach entirely different conclusions from the same drinking episode because they are looking for different things.
A standard urine alcohol test looks for ethanol
Ethanol enters the bloodstream rapidly after drinking and is primarily metabolized by the liver. The body begins processing it almost immediately, with alcohol dehydrogenase converting ethanol to acetaldehyde and other enzymes ultimately breaking it down further. Although metabolism proceeds at a relatively steady pace within an individual, the rate varies substantially from person to person.
This is also why the familiar saying that the body processes “exactly one drink per hour” should not be treated as a medical formula. Drink strength, drinking speed, body composition, genetics, liver size, food intake, and other factors influence alcohol concentration and metabolism.
An EtG test looks for evidence that alcohol was processed
Only a small fraction of consumed ethanol becomes EtG and EtS, but these metabolites persist considerably longer than ethanol itself. They can also become highly concentrated in urine, making them useful markers of recent drinking.
That creates the situation that surprises many people: You can feel completely sober and still test positive for recent alcohol consumption.
Urine EtG testing is therefore used primarily as evidence of recent alcohol exposure, not as a measure of whether someone is currently intoxicated.
How Long Until Alcohol Is “Out” of My Urine?
There is no universal hour at which urine becomes “clean.”
The phrase itself can describe two different events:
- Ethanol falling below the test’s detection limit.
- EtG or EtS falling below the laboratory’s cutoff.
Those events can occur many hours, or even days, apart.
Controlled research demonstrates why exact predictions are difficult. In one alcohol-challenge study, EtG performed well for detecting alcohol consumption during the previous 24 hours, but sensitivity declined substantially as more time passed. By 48 hours, detection was far less reliable across the tested doses and cutoff values.
Other studies and laboratory guidance document longer detection, particularly with lower thresholds or heavier exposure. This is where popular claims about an “80-hour EtG test” originate. But “up to 80 hours” should not be interpreted as meaning everyone who drinks will remain positive for exactly 80 hours, or that everyone will be negative afterward.
What changes the detection window?
How much alcohol was consumed. A person drinking heavily generally produces more alcohol metabolites than someone having a single standard drink. A recent 2025 pharmacokinetic study also found that urinary EtG and EtS excretion increased with alcohol dose.
The laboratory cutoff. A laboratory looking for very low concentrations can detect alcohol metabolites longer than one using a higher threshold.
Time since the last drink. Concentrations generally decline as metabolites are eliminated, but the decline is not identical in everyone.
Urine concentration. Hydration changes how concentrated urine is. Drinking water does not suddenly accelerate liver metabolism, however, and laboratories can evaluate measures such as creatinine when urine dilution is relevant. Research has demonstrated that water intake can lower measured EtG concentration while having much less effect when EtG is evaluated relative to urinary creatinine.
Individual biology. Genetic differences in alcohol-metabolizing pathways can contribute to variability. NIAAA notes that alcohol metabolism varies considerably between individuals, and recent EtG/EtS research has also identified differences associated with genetic variants.
What does “one drink” actually mean?
This matters more than many people realize.
In the United States, one standard drink contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol. That is approximately:
- 12 ounces of 5% beer
- 5 ounces of 12% wine
- 1.5 ounces of 40% distilled spirits
But a strong craft beer, oversized wine pour, or cocktail containing several shots can represent two or more standard drinks even when someone describes it as “one drink.”
Can I Pass an Alcohol Urine Test After 24, 48, or 72 Hours?
There is no scientifically responsible way to guarantee that an individual will test negative at a particular hour.
After 24 hours
Ethanol itself may already be undetectable, while an EtG or EtS test can still be positive. Clinical studies show urinary EtG/EtS can readily identify many recent drinking episodes during this period.
After 48 hours
Some people will test negative, particularly after lower alcohol exposure or when a higher laboratory cutoff is used. Others can remain positive.
This is exactly why “48 hours” should not be treated as a pass/fail guarantee. Controlled studies have found declining EtG sensitivity by this point, while real-world and laboratory data demonstrate that detectable metabolites sometimes persist longer.
After 72 hours
A positive result becomes less common as more time passes, but it remains possible following heavier drinking, depending on the assay and cutoff. Reports of EtG/EtS detection beyond 72 hours are one reason these tests are useful for abstinence monitoring.
What about five days?
Some laboratory references describe urinary EtG/EtS detection windows extending as long as approximately five days. That represents the outer portion of a variable range, not a universal rule.
The safest interpretation is simple:
The farther you get from the last alcohol exposure, the less likely detection generally becomes, but no chart can predict an individual’s result with certainty.
And there is no proven detox drink, exercise routine, sauna session, vitamin regimen, or quantity of coffee that makes the liver suddenly metabolize alcohol faster. NIAAA notes that alcohol metabolism proceeds at its own steady rate despite attempts to “sober up” with caffeine or similar strategies.
What an EtG Result Can, and Cannot, Tell You
This is one of the most misunderstood parts of alcohol testing.
An EtG test is powerful, but it is not a forensic time machine.
A positive result can support the conclusion that alcohol exposure occurred recently.
It generally cannot tell you with certainty:
- Exactly what time someone drank
- Exactly how many drinks they consumed
- Whether they were intoxicated at the time of testing
- Whether two people with the same EtG concentration drank identical amounts
Studies have found substantial person-to-person variation in urinary EtG and EtS concentrations, meaning the number itself should be interpreted cautiously rather than converted directly into drinks or hours.
Why cutoff levels matter
Laboratories do not simply ask whether a single molecule of EtG exists. They establish a concentration threshold, a cutoff, above which a result is considered positive.
Common thresholds can range from around 100 ng/mL to 500 ng/mL or more, depending on the laboratory and purpose of testing. ARUP, for example, lists different cutoffs for quantitative EtG/EtS testing and screening tests.
Lower thresholds can detect smaller concentrations for longer but may create more interpretive uncertainty. Higher thresholds sacrifice some sensitivity but reduce concern about very low-level environmental alcohol exposure.
That distinction matters when someone asks, “Can hand sanitizer or mouthwash make an EtG test positive?”
Under unusually intensive exposure, alcohol-containing products can produce measurable metabolites. However, research involving repeated use of high-alcohol mouthwash found EtG concentrations remained below a 500 ng/mL threshold, illustrating why test cutoff and context matter.
When results have serious legal, occupational, medical, or treatment consequences, interpretation should involve the testing laboratory and appropriate professional rather than relying on an internet detection-time chart.
The Newer Picture: Alcohol Testing Is Becoming More Sophisticated
Another important development is that modern alcohol monitoring increasingly involves multiple biomarkers rather than one urine result.
EtG and EtS are often measured together because the combination can improve interpretation. EtS is also less vulnerable than EtG to certain bacterial changes that may occur in a urine specimen after collection. Modern laboratories increasingly use liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for confirmatory testing because of its analytical specificity.
For longer-term monitoring, clinicians may also use phosphatidylethanol, or PEth, a blood biomarker associated with alcohol exposure over a longer period. Current laboratory guidance places PEth’s window at roughly one to two weeks or longer, and a 2024 scientific review described PEth as an increasingly important objective alcohol biomarker.
Research published in 2026 comparing thousands of clinical samples also illustrates why the tests should be viewed as complementary: urine EtG/EtS is particularly useful for relatively recent alcohol exposure, while PEth can reveal a longer pattern that a short-window urine test may miss.
In other words, alcohol testing is moving away from the question “Did this person drink within exactly X hours?” toward a more clinically useful question: “What does this combination of biomarkers tell us about recent and ongoing alcohol exposure?”
When Does Worrying About an Alcohol Test Point to a Bigger Problem?
Sometimes a search about urine testing is simply practical. Someone may be trying to understand a medical result, comply with a treatment program, or make sense of testing requirements. But sometimes the test is only the surface question.
The deeper question sounds more like: Why am I repeatedly calculating how long I can drink before someone finds out?
That distinction matters. Consider someone who spends Sunday morning calculating whether Friday night’s drinking will appear on Monday’s urine test. Once, that may simply reflect uncertainty. But if drinking is repeatedly being organized around testing schedules, work consequences, court requirements, family conflict, or attempts to conceal use, the more important issue may no longer be metabolite clearance.
NIAAA defines heavy drinking as five or more drinks on any day or 15 or more per week for men, and four or more on any day or eight or more per week for women. Those numbers do not diagnose alcohol use disorder by themselves, but drinking despite consequences, difficulty controlling use, cravings, tolerance, and withdrawal are among the warning signs that deserve closer attention.
A special warning about withdrawal
If someone drinks heavily or daily, the goal should not simply become waiting until the urine test turns negative.
Suddenly stopping alcohol after chronic heavy use can trigger withdrawal. Symptoms can include tremors, sweating, insomnia, anxiety, nausea, elevated pulse or blood pressure, seizures, and delirium tremens. Severe alcohol withdrawal can be life-threatening and may require medically supervised detoxification.
Anyone with a history of severe withdrawal, seizures, significant daily alcohol use, or serious medical conditions should seek medical guidance rather than attempting an unsupported detox.
Final Answer: How Long Does Alcohol Stay in Urine?
For ethanol itself, think primarily in terms of hours. Laboratory guidance commonly places the urine ethanol detection window at approximately 1–12 hours.
For EtG and EtS, think in terms of days rather than hours. Detection commonly extends roughly 24–48 hours, can reach or exceed 72 hours after heavier exposure, and some laboratory references describe a possible window approaching five days depending on the assay and circumstances. But the most important sentence in this article may be this:
A detection window is a probability range, not a deadline. A urine test cannot be reliably predicted from a stopwatch because the amount consumed, test type, cutoff, urine concentration, metabolism, genetics, and other variables all matter.
And if the question “How long will alcohol stay in my urine?” has become something you find yourself asking repeatedly, because alcohol is creating problems at work, at home, in treatment, with the courts, or with your own health, the most useful answer may not be another calculation.
